Manuka honey is derived from the Tasmanian tea tree, Leptospermum scoparium. Its unique antibacterial properties come from Methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring compound that specifically targets bacteria. Every batch of honey is tested in a certified laboratory to determine its MGO rating, with 100+ MGO containing a minimum of 100mg methylglyoxal per kilo of honey. Due to its strong medicinal flavour, Manuka honey is best consumed on its own for antibacterial purposes or used as a marinade.
